Heard at Our House

Me (in a rush to get things done before we leave for church): "We have 50 brushes!  How come when it is time to do the girls hair there isn't a single brush in the drawer?"

Rogene: "Maybe we need 100 brushes."

(That answer totally made me laugh.  I was expecting something more like, "We should teach the kids to not take brushes out of the drawer and carry them around the house.")

How the drawer with the brushes should look when it is time to do two little girlies hair…

Canada Trip Highlights

We just got back from our Spring Break trip to visit family in Canada (so if you haven't seen me around lately, that is where I've been!).  I'll be posting a few of the highlights of our trip…

Works for Me Wednesday

wfmwWhat works for me this week is packing lists.  We actually are spending our spring break visiting family in Canada right now!

I hate packing!  What makes it easier for me is to make an individualized packing list for each member of the family.  I keep them on my computer so I can update them and print them at a moments notice.

Instead of throwing away the lists after I'm done packing I take the lists with me on our trip.  On the back I write "Things I'm Glad I Brought" and "Things I Wish I Had Brought".  I add to those two categories for the whole trip and when I get home I update the packing list.

P.S. I also have a packing list for boat trips to the lake (sunscreen!  sun hats! flip flops! water noodles! sand toys!), picnics (sharp knife! hand sanitizer! wet wipes!) and camping trips (matches! folding chairs! marshmallows!).

(Inside family joke… "Don't forget the sandwiches!")

What works for you this week?

Emma 16 Month Newsletter

Dear Emma,

Happy 16 month birthday!emma school lot 1

I cooked a grilled cheese sandwich (your favorite!) for you, cooled it, cut it up into smallish pieces, put it in a little bowl and put it on your high chair tray.  You took one bite, did the sign language sign for "all done", shook your head sadly and handed the bowl back to me.  I had to laugh because the sandwich was a little overdone on one side so I had tried to put the perfectly cooked side up and trick you, just like my dad always used to trick me.  (I always noticed it was over done on one side, sorry Dad.)  Apparently you are a chip off the old block.

You are saying so many new words this month.  Cheese, raisin, Elmo… I'm having a hard time keeping up with all the new words.

Finding Tessa's discarded sippy cups, hiding and pounding down the juice before she notices is still a big favorite thing to do this month.

You've begun to play with Tessa more frequently.  A few days ago the two of you were chasing each other around the circle that our living room, dining room, kitchen and hallway make.  You were scaring each other and screaming, chasing and laughing, having the time of your lives.  It was great to hear, and fun to watch.

You and Tessa like dancing together, and you are nearly running these days in an effort to keep up with Tessa.

Your nicknames this month are Emmybear, Eh-muh (said in a whiny voice), Snugglebunny, Snuggle-bucket, Pooh, Little pooh, Cootiebug, Cruddyface (yup, you're still cruddy), and Daddy calls you "Little Moon Pie".  Sometimes we slip and call you Elmo instead of Emma.

We celebrated St. Patrick's Day this month by doing, um, exactly zero.  Mommy totally forgot.  Since I'm part Irish (and therefore so are you), here is an Irish Blessing for you…

*Irish Bedtime Blessing*
Wee Little One
May the Good Lord keep watch as you peacefully rest,
And as you awaken, may each day be blessed
With His loving kindness, compassion and grace,
And many tomorrows in His warm embrace.

We took a spring break trip to Canada this month.  You got your 7th tooth while we were there, and you were working on the 8th too.  So you were, um, the eensiest bit fussy.  *Ahem*

emma mall 3

During this trip you said Tessa "Teh-Tuh!" for the first time.  (I was secretly worried you would never say her name!  You know, to more easily ignore her all together.)  We all stay in the same bedroom when we visit your Lolo and Lola, and on the baby monitor I could hear you calling out to Tessa after we put you two to bed.  You'd say "Teh-tuh!" and she would call back to you "Emma!" and you both would laugh.  It brought back memories of my sister and I sharing a room when I was little.  Ah, good times.  Aren't sisters great?

Suddenly, this month you have fallen love with Elmo.  You point to the TV and say "ELMO!", you carry a stuffed Elmo around with you.  You find books with Elmo on them and bring them to us (but won't let us read them to you).  Of course, Elmo toys are the best thing ever.

(In this picture you are holding an Elmo by the arm, another Elmo by the eye ball, and watching Elmo on TV.  You're wearing your favorite uniform… a diaper and some pretty beads.  Fancy!)

emma elmo

On the very long car trip home from Canada we stopped at Krispy Kreme.  The highlight of our day was watching you poke your finger into the donuts, all the way to the filling, and then laugh.

emmapokedonut

Emma, you are such a happy baby.  After spending the day with you and Tessa, my heart is drunk with smiles and laughter.  I can't imagine what my life would be had you not come into it.

emma mall 4

I want you to know that I pray for you always.  I pray for your safety, for your health, for your spiritual well-being, for your future friends and future husband.  I want so many good things for you in your life.  Abraham Lincoln once said,

"I remember my mother's prayers and they have followed me always. They have clung to me all my life."

I hope my prayers cling to you.*

Love,

Mama

Stomp stomp stomp I'm an Emma

Hear my Emma yell

Stomp stomp stomp I'm an Emma

Smell my Emma smell

Movie Quote Monday

mqmToday's movie quote is…

"Excuse me, sir, where are you going?

I'm going over to her house. I'm going to stand outside her door until she let's me in, and I'm not leaving 'til I get her back.

How are you going to do that, sir?

Well, I haven't worked that out yet, but I'm sure groveling will be involved."

Leave me a comment with your answer.

**Congrats to Tiffany, Growing in Grace, Lauren S., Melissa Goins, Michelle, Terrific Teens and Corinne for guessing last week's Movie Quote Monday correctly.**

Sunday Festivus 12th Edition

festivus

My grievance this week is with my own clumsiness.

I knocked over a full glass of water.

It was right on the edge of the kitchen counter top.

My purse was on the floor right below the water glass.

Care to guess what happened?

You are correct!  I knocked the glass over, it tipped in the exactly right direction and the water spilled in a perfect arc to splash my entire purse including the credit card slots, the interior pockets and even the little zippered pocket where I keep the lip gloss and the band aids.  Not one area of my purse was dry.

Actually now that I think about it, it is a pretty good trick.  Anybody can knock a glass over and get water in one pocket of their purse… but can they manage to soak every pocket?

What happened to you this week that grieved you?  You'll feel better if you post it on your blog.  Don't forget to head over to Terrific Teens to add your link and read more Festivus Fun.
